Double or triple glazing: which should you choose?
Compare window specifications, comfort, noise priorities and cost before choosing double or triple glazing.
Compare the complete windows proposed for your property. A third pane can improve thermal insulation, but the frame, glass specification, opening arrangement and fitting also matter. Ask what the additional cost would achieve in your rooms.
What changes between the two?
Double glazing has two panes; triple glazing has three. The spaces between them, coatings and frame design all form part of the specification. Ask for a written comparison of the actual products being offered.
Compare whole-window performance
Ask whether a quoted U-value describes the glazing alone or the whole window. Compare figures on the same basis. Energy ratings can help describe performance, but this site does not promise a particular rating for an unspecified product.
Discuss outside noise separately
Pane count alone is not a reliable way to select acoustic performance. Explain the type of noise, which rooms are affected and any ventilation requirements. Ask for supporting performance information for the proposed glass and frame combination.

Consider operation and fitting
A change in glazing specification may affect frame and hardware choices. Ask the surveyor to check the proposed opening arrangement, ease of use and compatibility with the property rather than assuming an existing frame can take a different unit.
Compare the additional cost
Request double- and triple-glazed options on the same window schedule. Decide whether the benefit matters in each room and ask what other work is included. Avoid relying on a promised bill saving without evidence and assumptions relevant to your home.
Make the choice after the survey
Bring a list of the rooms that feel uncomfortable and what you want to improve. The survey should turn that list into a clear product recommendation, written specification and quotation you can compare.
